Starbucks Taps Polygon for Its 'Starbucks® Odyssey' Web3 Experience

Today, we are thrilled to announce that Starbucks Coffee Company is working with Polygon to provide the blockchain technology to build its recently announced Web3 experience, Starbucks Odyssey.

As a result of the partnership, this new Web3-powered experience will allow Starbucks Rewards loyalty program members and Starbucks partners (employees) in the United States to earn and purchase digital collectible stamps in the form of non-fungible tokens (NFTs). This one-of-a-kind loyalty program experience is powered by the low fees and high transaction speeds on the Polygon PoS network.

Web3 Experience With a Cause

Implementing Web3 technology will pave the way for Starbucks to engage with its Starbucks Rewards loyalty program members in exciting new ways, unlocking access to immersive coffee experiences from unique merchandise and artist collaborations to invitations to exclusive events.

Starting today, Sept. 12, customers and partners can join the waitlist for a chance to be the first to receive access to the Starbucks Odyssey experience, which will launch later this year.

“Building Starbucks Odyssey using technology that aligns with our sustainability aspirations and commitments is a top priority. We took a very thoughtful and thorough approach when evaluating which blockchain to utilize and Polygon’s fast, low-cost, and carbon-neutral network is the perfect foundation for our first digital community,” said Ryan Butz, vp of loyalty, strategy and marketing for Starbucks.

Built With Long-Term Sustainability in Mind

Polygon has committed to becoming carbon negative by the end of the year and has already offset its network’s cumulative CO2 debt. Ethereum chain’s imminent transition to a Proof-of-Stake consensus mechanism will further reduce the carbon footprint of Polygon PoS by 99.91%.

Polygon PoS has emerged as a hub for some of the most important Web3 projects, including DeFi protocols like Aave, Uniswap V3, NFT marketplaces OpenSea and Mark Cuban-founded Lazy.com. The network’s technical capabilities, a thriving ecosystem and the team’s commitment to sustainability are also why companies such as Adobe, Stripe and Dolce Gabbana have chosen Polygon as their default gateway to Web3.

Sandeep Nailwal, Co-Founder of Polygon, says, “Polygon is a natural choice for Starbucks as both companies place tremendous importance on diversity, accessibility, and sustainability. As a leading infrastructure provider enabling people and technology to collaborate and exchange value globally and freely, Polygon provides the ideal launchpad for Starbucks’ entry into Web3.”

Tune in to the Polygon Blog for the latest ecosystem updates, and let's bring the world to Ethereum!
