Polygon 2.0 Milestone: POL Contracts Are Live on Ethereum Mainnet

Polygon News

Today marks a major milestone on the Polygon 2.0 journey toward building the Value Layer of the Internet. The upgrade to POL has been initiated on Ethereum mainnet, after months of development, community consultation and a successful testnet launch.

POL, a next-generation hyperproductive token, will power a vast ecosystem of zero knowledge-based Layer 2 chains via a native re-staking protocol that allows POL holders to validate multiple chains and perform multiple roles on each of those chains (sequencing, ZK proof generation, participation in data availability committees, etc.).

The POL upgrade also paves the way for the next series of milestones in the Polygon 2.0 roadmap. That list includes launching a new staking layer to power Polygon L2s, upgrading Polygon PoS to zkRollup, and implementing an advanced, ZK-powered interoperability and shared liquidity protocol for all these L2s. See Polygon 2.0 Vision and PIP-18: Polygon 2.0 Phase 0 - Frontier for more details.

Find answers to your questions in the FAQ below and check the Polygon 2.0 roadmap to track the progress. Tune into the blog and our social channels to keep up with updates about the Polygon ecosystem.

The contract address for the POL token on Ethereum is 0x455e53CBB86018Ac2B8092FdCd39d8444aFFC3F6
Check it out here: https://etherscan.io/address/0x455e53CBB86018Ac2B8092FdCd39d8444aFFC3F6

Together, we can bring a fundamental change to the Internet that enables everyone to equitably access its value.

FAQ

1. Is there anything I need to do today as a Polygon PoS, Polygon zkEVM user or MATIC holder?

Nothing. This upgrade does not change active systems on either the Polygon PoS or Polygon zkEVM networks at this time. All existing contracts will function as previously designed.

If you would like to join the governance process and give your input, you can join the discussion on the forum.

2. Is there anything I need to do today as a node operator or staker?

Nothing. You can provide feedback on the proposed changes in the PIPs and monitor Github and the forum for new node software versions to remain compatible with your given chain when PIPs are approved by the community.

3. Is there anything I need to do today as an application or tooling developer?

Nothing. Please review the relevant PIPs, provide feedback on the proposed changes and analyze if any changes break your smart contracts. Developers for applications on the Polygon PoS should not see any breaking changes.
