Earlier today, the 10-day timelock for upgrading Polygon zkEVM Mainnet Beta was initiated. This is a servicing update to improve the resiliency of Polygon zkEVM and enhance the sovereignty of chains built with Polygon CDK by allowing these chains to upgrade whenever they want.

The transaction containing the proposal for the upgrade can be found here:

End users and infra providers do not need to take any action ahead of the smart contracts upgrade.

Because it requires changes to the PolygonRollupManager.solPolygonZkEVMGlobalExitRootV2.sol smart contracts, implementing this update follows the governance model for Polygon zkEVM. The timelock concludes on October 28.

We remind devs and users that the timelock is in place for their security and protection, giving sufficient time to withdraw funds, if desired, before an upgrade is implemented.

What is in the update?

The update enhances network resiliency, introduces rewinds for Polygon zkEVM and CDK chains, and lays the groundwork for more sovereignty; additionally, this update begins the data structure management required for supporting blobs via 4844.

Features:

  • Sovereignty for Polygon CDK chains: The update enables CDK chains to upgrade to the latest specs at their leisure. This enables maximum developer flexibility and sovereignty, without forcing upgrades on developers.
  • Rewinds: improve the network’s security, resilience, and operational efficiency. Rewinds provide a way for a network administrator to temporarily commit data with the ability to revert only those transactions that have not already been verified.
