Project Spotlight: Decentraland — The first Fully Decentralised Metaverse

Polygon’s vibrant ecosystem of projects and Dapps has led to wide adoption with more than 15M transactions, 300K unique users thanks to 130+ brilliant decentralized applications.

Introducing Project Spotlight: an initiative to highlight and get to know the Dapps on Polygon a little better!

Our second project in this series is Decentraland: The first fully decentralised metaverse.

With more than 100,000 users, exhibitions from top artists and vibrant ecosystems like Decentral Games, Decentraland is the pioneer of a virtual world powered by blockchain.

Can you introduce us to the awesome team building Decentraland?

Decentraland is an open-source project with community contributions from around the world. The Decentraland Foundation is just a small ancillary team of developers, artists, and organizers dedicated to nurturing the long-term growth of the platform. We do this by providing developer tools and documentation, user education and onboarding support, and organizing events.

Please tell us a little about Decentraland and its cyberpunk metaverse.

Decentraland is a virtual world owned by its users. With a finite amount of 3D space that is segmented and represented by ERC721 tokens, or NFTs, Decentraland blends digital scarcity, user-generated content, and open social worlds. Decentraland is fun for content creators, gamers, or anyone interested in exploring new and immersive virtual spaces.

Why did you guys choose Polygon for scaling?

Polygon plays a critical role in scaling the number of users, and transactions, that Decentraland can support. Player avatars and wearables, game mechanics, collectibles, and more all rely on the ability to generate and process thousands of blockchain transactions — doing so quickly and in a way that’s affordable for players is a hard requirement for Decentraland. Polygon’s robust platform and interoperability make it an easy choice for Decentraland.

What got your team into Blockchain and Crypto?

Ethereum has opened up a seemingly endless array of possibilities. But for Decentraland, the lure is the ability to create a space free from any centralized control where users can build, share, and experience truly unique three-dimensional experiences.

Tell us a fun fact about yourself!

Inspiration for Decentraland has been drawn from iconic books and movies like Snow Crash and Ready Player One. With such strong roots in the aesthetics and ideals of open metaverses, Decentraland is excited to help usher in the next era of the internet.
