Football Fever Sweeps Web3 Around the World

Nothing transcends boundaries like sports. As the football fever grips the world, Web3 projects and communities are no exception.

Polygon Football Collection, a set of 32 free football digital collectibles representing each of the countries participating in the cup, was our way of celebrating the beautiful game and our global community. All 320,000 of the NFTs were claimed within the first 48 hours and are now only available on OpenSea.

As the championship nears its finale, we wanted to share some of the most interesting projects that bring the greatest show on earth to Web3 by building on Polygon.

FC Barcelona’s ‘In a Way, Immortal’

In a Way, Immortal is the first of ten NFTs celebrating FC Barcelona's rich history. The audio-visual artwork recreates the legendary goal in the 1973 match against Atlético Madrid that earned Johan Cruyff “The Flying Dutchman” moniker. The NFT sold for $693,000 at a Sotheby’s auction in New York. The rest of the collection will be presented piece-by-piece over the coming months, so stay tuned for more iconic FC Barcelona moments and characters.

Liverpool FC Heroes Club

Liverpool Football Club entered the NFT scene with its LFC Heroes Club collection. The Reds introduced two types of digital collectibles: Legendary Edition and Hero Edition.

The Legendary is a collection of one-of-a-kind NFTs featuring 24 members of the LFC men's team, each of which was auctioned off to the highest bidder. The Hero limited edition NFTs each featured a different LFC player or manager. Owning an NFT in this collection gives fans exclusive access to an LFC community forum, holders-only experiences, virtual hang-outs, competitions, LFC merch discounts, etc.

Ethernity’s Lionel Messi NFTs

Ethernity.io released an exclusive line of NFTs celebrating Lionel Messi's football career. Messi fans can get their hands on limited edition collectibles that will serve as a token for a cutting-edge NFT experience, commemorating his international debut in the summer of 2006. Participants can win one of up to four unique collectibles commemorating Messi's international appearances for Argentina in the summers of 2010, 2014, 2018, and 2022.

ONSIDE NFT Collectibles

SPORTFIVE and Be Media by Animoca Brands have collaborated on an NFT collection ONSIDE for this year's AFF Mitsubishi Electric Cup, powered by Polygon. The NFTs will allow users to acquire digital items like stylized masks and access to iconic match moments. The rewards will include real-world experiences, exclusive on-pitch access, access to post-game press conferences and digital games or rewards within the Animoca Brands ecosystem.

ZED RUN Metaverse Cup

ZED RUN Metaverse Cup is a month-long competition modeled after the world’s beautiful game launched by the ZED RUN horse-racing game on Polygon. Players can manage their teams and compete for in-game rewards in support of soccer fan communities around the world. The tournament runs through Dec. 20.

World League Live

World League Live is a football game that combines the metaverse, NFTs, and Play-to-Earn economics to elevate the experience for the player and reward the fan base.The social game mechanics, NFTs of celebrities, prizes, and in-game token challenges come together to create an immersive virtual experience. Football stars including Alessandro del Piero, Roberto Carlos and John Terry are working with World League Live to launch their own NFTs.

WinGoal by Metaland

WinGoal by Metaland is a Play-to-Earn game powered by the Unity Engine and Opta that combines football, real-time predictions, reality sports and live match streaming. The collaboration with Opta allows WinGoal to use live World Cup data feeds and map real-world player performance directly onto the game's NFT characters.

MetaSoccer

MetaSoccer is a football management game that allows users to create their own clubs and earn money while playing. Players can build their own squads, raise the next generation of football stars and compete against other managers. The game includes scouting, mentoring, training and rewards in its native token.

GOL-BALL

GOL-BALL is creating a way to do something most fans can only dream of -- to own the goal scoring match. Fans can now own a virtual piece of history for LaLiga matches by buying authenticated collectible goal scoring balls. This functionality is coming in early 2023.
